About Maxine

Practising Ashtanga Yoga consistently since 1992 has contributed enormously to Maxine’s understanding and teaching of Ashtanga Yoga.

Maxine is very grateful to her teachers Graeme Northfield and Iain Clark. She is also thankful to Richard Clark at Ashtanga Yoga Shala (AYS) Brisbane for his mentoring and all that he continues to teach her.

She was privileged to spend 4 weeks with Sri K Pattabhi Jois (1915–2009) at the old shala in Lakshmipuram, Mysore, Southern India. The nature of her classes are greatly influenced by his early teachings where Ashtanga Yoga methods and techniques were taught for the individual, according to abilities and needs.

Over the years, Maxine has participated and practised in classes, workshops and/or retreats with Dena Kingsberg, Tim Miller, David Williams and Sharath Rangaswamy (Pattabhi Jois’s grandson). She has also studied Yoga philosophy and Sanskrit courses with Sri Rama Ramanuja Acarya (Rami).

Following family traditions, Maxine’s mother Bonnie taught Hatha Yoga for 30 years, with the International Yoga Teacher’s Association (IYTA founded by Roma Blair). Teaching in Adelaide at Bette Calman’s Yoga Centre from 1974–1986, then continuing classes on the Gold Coast until 2000. After returning to Adelaide she stopped teaching for a few years to care for her husband. At 89 years Bonnie recently retired from running a meditation group in Brighton, Adelaide. She has always been one of Maxine’s greatest inspirations, teacher and mentor especially for applying yoga to daily life.

Maxine is honoured and grateful to have this practice in her life constantly providing inspiration and guidance to face life’s daily challenges. She continues to practise and study daily and is a fully Registered Senior teacher with Yoga Australia.

With a 42-year background as a Visual Art teacher in state high schools, Maxine is passionate about working with others. Her experience in teaching art and yoga combine to create yoga classes, which are informative, stimulating, caring in nature and honouring of each individual.
